Sistine Chapel in London

Melanie Stimmell has been invited to be the artistic director for a monumental project in London, Canada this August. In her 4th year with the festival, she will lead a team of 9 artist in recreating the central panels of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling on the asphalt for the Expressions in Chalk Street Painting Festival . The street painting will take up over 1600 square feet at 18 x 92 feet, and will illustrate the most recognizable scenes from Michelangelo's Vatican masterpiece. The original was begun in 1508 and was not complete until 1512. London's team of 9, lead by Melanie, will complete it in 6 days, with the finish ready for viewing on Sunday, August 2nd. The team will include 2 other international artists from California, Genna Panzarella & Lysa Ashley, and 6 local London artists.

Melanie has also created a fine art piece for the event to Auction off. The proceeds will go to supporting the arts in downtown London.

I Madonnari Street Painting Festival

Santa Barbara had another great year of street painting despite the recent fires. My sponsor was Carol Ostroff CPA - I've had the same sponsor the last 3 years & she is great! After painting butterflies in my Mother Nature painting in Houston, I was excited to try some more. So, I chose to do a reproduction of a Sophie Anderson's Butterfly Fairy. I love the image with the velvety butterflies, flowing blonde hair, & little satin sachel the fairy is holding. The butterflies came out especially vibrant by using some home-made pastels. The colors are more rich and velvety...especially that dark blue one.

Mermaids & Mother Nature

Remmie and I spend a week in Houston for the Via Colori Kick-Off and the Visual Arts Scholastic Event. Two 12 x 12 street paintings in 4 days is no small feat but it went very well and I think the images turned out great. The first, titled, "Sea Melody" was designed specifically for the Center of Hearing and Speech, which Via Colori, Houston benefits. I wanted to create something depicting the idea of creating & hearing sound or melody. The 10 x 12 piece was created on canvas and may be auctioned off at
the Via Colori Street Painting Festival next November.

For the Visual Arts Scholastic Event I had the idea of a mother nature /mother art type figure - painting the landscape with butterflies and flowers. While I created the center 11x11 foot image, the students of VASE were encouraged to help paint the border which wrapped around the outer edges with vines, blooms, birds, butterflies, & mushrooms. They did a fantastic job and really enjoyed helping create the finished piece which was later hung in the auditorium for the final awards ceremony.

Visual Arts Scholastic Event

I am very honored to be invited back as the featured performing artist for Houston's Visual Arts Scholastic Event, or VASE. My last performance in 2007 left the organization with a 12 x 12 foot original, canvas street painting which they displayed at events throughout the year.

This years image will be an original, on canvas, titled "Mother Earth" which will include an interactive border that will allow audience to participate in the painting process over the two day event.

The Street Painter's Guide to the Pavement

After many years of requests about a street painting tutorial DVD, I've finally created one. Working with colleague and friend Peter Westerink from StreetPainting.nl, I performed a short, step by step tutorial street painting for the DVD titled, "The Street Painter's Guide to the Pavement. Volume 1: Getting You Started" Peter and Coldsun Productions did an amazing job filming and editing the first in what we hope to be a series of tutorials for artists.

"From the tools and supplies you need, to the techniques of sketching your image, applying chalk, and achieving rich colors that pop off the pavement, you will have all you need to get started!"

Street Painting of the Water Nymph

The festival in Houston, Texas which benefits the Center for Hearing and Speech, has to be one of my favorite events. The location is really great and the organizers are amazing. They really take care of the artists and are so appreciative of what they do. I can't say enough about the event and the organization it supports. Remmie and I both had such an amazing time, and even though it was a little chilly, the weather held out with clear skies.

The painting I created for them is titled the Water Nymph. I am really happy with the end result. Red hair again ;) Anytime I can paint red hair I do...It's so fun to do long flowing locks of fiery red hair.

Street Painting in Houston.

This weekend is the Via Colori Street Painting Festival in Houston, Texas. Last year I was the festivals featured artist and unfortunately we were rained out. I barely finished a face in my painting before it began to pour. This year is destined for great weather. I've designed a new image for the event. It is based on the painting I designed for 07 but revamped. Here's the sketch!

It's titled 'The Water Nymph'. She'll have flowing red hair, of course!
